2024 IBEX Innovation Award Interview with Commercial Sewing

Written by Theresa Nicholson

When the Innovation Award judges got a chance to see the Outer Armor Self-Booting Power Bimini in action on the 2024 IBEX show floor, the judges were impressed across the board. Based on the number of Bimini products presented at recent shows, there appears to be nothing short of a revolution in consumer demand for retractable Biminis. The Outer Armor Self-Booting Power Bimini stands out for its exceptional design and function. The smooth, hassle-free deployment system solves several problems for its target market and definitively elevates boaters’ time on the water. Brett Keating, Commercial Sewing’s vice president of business development and marketing, spoke to us about the product.

What problem was the Outer Armor Self-Booting Power Bimini designed to solve?

The Self-Booting Power Bimini was designed to solve several practical and safety-related issues commonly faced by pontoon owners. The Self-Booting Bimini eliminates the hassle and manual labor of installing and removing a canvas boot, as the Self-Booting Power Bimini automatically deploys or stows with the push of a button from the helm. It enhances the longevity of the canvas, which is protected within a boot box instead of being exposed to potential wear and tear. It reduces the risk of accidents, as people previously had to climb onto furniture to install or remove the canvas boot. And, it reduces incidents where boots accidentally fall into the water or get lost.

Who is the target market for the Self-Booting Power Bimini?

Our target market is high-end pontoon owners who value convenience, ease of use, and quality. In addition, we’re targeting individuals who may have difficulty reaching the Bimini, and who are not highly dexterous. And those who prefer an automatic solution for deploying and stowing the Bimini top.

Who is currently using the Self-Booting Power Bimini? What feedback have you received?

The product was launched in October 2024 and is being integrated with pontoon boats for the upcoming model year. Feedback so far has been positive, with users appreciating the automatic functionality and the robustness of the Bimini frame and boot. Customers are excited about the durability, as test units have endured over 20,000 operational cycles and are rated to perform at speeds of up to 65 mph. Some customers have suggested aesthetic improvements, though the functionality has been well received. An updated boot design is in process for release in early 2026.

What types of boats are the new Biminis being used on?

The Self-Booting Power Bimini is designed specifically for pontoon boats and does not change the boat-building process. It can be installed either on the production line or by dealerships, by simply bolting it to the frame and connecting the wiring.

What are its unique selling points? What challenges did you face in product development?

While other companies do offer power Biminis, the Self-Booting Power Bimini aims to innovate by combining durability, automation, and ease of use. One significant challenge during R&D was sourcing quality components during supply chain disruptions. Despite the setback, the company prioritized partnering with reliable suppliers over rushing production.

What plans are in place for the future of the Outer Armor Self-Booting Power Bimini?

The company plans to leverage multiple manufacturing sites to meet production demand and improve customer service. Although details are not yet public, the next generation of upgrades is already in development.
